The Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, announced on Saturday that it will not appoint any members to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) tasked with reviewing bills related to the dismissal of the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and Ministers. The party stated that if its members are detained or arrested for a continuous period of 30 days, they will not participate in the JPC. In a statement, TMC expressed its opposition to the introduction of the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill, asserting that the JPC is merely a facade. Therefore, they will not nominate anyone from the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC).
Controversial Bills Spark Outrage in Lok Sabha
Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced three contentious bills in the Lok Sabha: the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization (Amendment) Bill, 2025. The introduction of these bills led to significant uproar in the house, with the opposition accusing the central government of attempting to destabilize non-BJP state governments. Some opposition members even tore copies of the bills and threw them at Shah, who later stated that the bills would be forwarded to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC).
Banerjee Critiques Bills as Threats to Democracy Banerjee's Warning on Democratic Erosion
Following the introduction of the bills in Parliament, Mamata Banerjee remarked that these proposals would effectively 'end' the democratic era in the country and undermine the independence of the judiciary. She claimed that the bills would empower the Prime Minister and the Home Minister, describing this move as 'greater than a super-emergency.' In a post on X, she condemned the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill presented by the Indian government, labeling it as a step towards permanently abolishing India's democratic era. She warned that this harsh measure signifies a death knell for democracy and federalism in India.
